About

Our family owned business was opened in the spring of 1991 and was located in the Village of Lorette, Manitoba, Canada. Initially the company was started as C & S Garden Centre with a 100 square foot wooden frame greenhouse and a very small piece of residential property and some extremely supportive neighbours, friends and family.

In the fall of 1995 we moved to our current location. The location was an empty farmers field. Over the years greenhouses, parking lots and other displays were added to the property.

We are proud to produce all of our annuals, herbs, hanging baskets and other unique plants locally. Our plants are grown using sustainable crop production methods which include the use of organic fertilizers, integrated pest management and energy saving technology.

Our Friendly Staff

Chris was raised in Lorette and enjoyed playing hockey as a young man, all over western Canada and beyond. He obtained his diploma and bachelor of science in agriculture from the University of Manitoba. Upon beginning his bachelor degree in 1991, Chris built a small greenhouse in the family yard in Lorette. He grew annuals and perennials for sale, and included his parents in the project. By the mid 1990’s, at peak season customers were lined up around the block. A new location was required.  In autumn 1995, construction began at the existing site of C&S Country Gardens.  Chris has never looked back.
Susan is the eldest of six children. She was raised on a farm in central Manitoba and was quick to develop leadership skills and a resourceful nature.  She had a long successful career in the nursing field.  On spring and summer weekends, she and her young son Chris would visit local greenhouses. Thus began a keen interest in the garden industry for them both.
Alex was born and raised in south-central Manitoba. He always dreamed of life in a rural setting, in harmony with nature. Some of his best memories are long days on the tractor tilling the fields or harvesting the expansive vegetable garden with his grandson. Alex and his wife Susan enjoy their home situated right beside their son Chris’ family.
Dan has grown up in the garden centre. He loves having both his parents and two of his grandparents in his daily life around the greenhouse. Dan is an avid fisherman and swimmer, and enjoys his summers at University of Manitoba mini U. He is thriving at the local French Immersion school and enjoys all aspects of his dad’s business.

Quality Plants Grown In Lorette, MB

We are proud to produce all of our annuals, herbs, hanging baskets and other unique plants locally in Lorette, Manitoba. Our plants are grown using sustainable crop production methods which include the use of organic fertilizers, integrated pest management and energy saving technology.

Here is our recipe for quality:

  1. We collect rain water from our greenhouse roofs. We use rain water to irrigate our plants whenever possible, as the natural rain water is soft and can wash away any soluble salts that build up in the soil.
  2. One person is responsible for irrigating the plants in the greenhouses. This provides continuity and uniformity in the amount of water the plants receive. We have found this to be the most important part of producing a quality plant.
  3. Use water that has been warmed slightly. Water that has been slightly warmed reduces shock to the plant and does not reduce the temperature in the soil as rapidly.
  4. C & S Country Gardens is using beneficial insects in the greenhouse to control aphids, white flies, and other unwanted pests. Our goal is to eliminate synthetic insecticides and fungicides in our production systems. We are observing excellent results.
